200-level student of UNILORIN commits suicide over financial challenge
A 200-level Mass Communication student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has committed suicide in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The student, whose identity has been withheld, consumed a poisonous substance at his residence in the Oke-odo area of Tanke, Ilorin, leaving the university community in shock and mourning.
It was gathered that the deceased had been grappling with severe financial challenges, which reportedly began when he resumed his studies last year.
However, the situation worsened after the loss of his father a few years ago, leaving his mother, a retired school teacher, as the sole provider for his academic needs.
According to LEADERSHIP, a senior management staff of the university, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, despite her efforts, the financial burden became insurmountable.
Colleagues and friends of the deceased disclosed that they had previously rallied together to raise funds to cover his tuition fees and provide basic necessities like food.
However, the efforts were not enough to alleviate the mounting pressure he faced.
The incident occurred last weekend when the student’s roommate left for lectures
Upon returning, the roommate discovered the lifeless body and a poignant note left behind by the deceased.
However, the roommate immediately raised the alarm, prompting an investigation into the incident.
The deceased was said to be a potential first-class student at the department of Mass Communication before he decided to end his own life.
